Trees Save Lives

Why Are There Trees?
With so many coming down daily and habitats of animals and birds being destroyed at an alarming rate this is a fair
question. One may just as well ask, however, why do animals have lungs and gills and things? The ignorance in the
world concerning issues like how life survives is juxtaposed over the hunger for money and the need for jobs.
Until the money hungry reapers of forest trees and those who see mining dollars as the solution to everything stop their
destruction of forests we are living in a dream world. Perhaps it might be better described as a sinking boat or an
inflamed oven.
Trees do more than pump out essential oxygen into the air for us all to breathe. They produce fruit and nuts for animals
of all types to eat, including ourselves. They produce moisture and regulate the temperature of the earth by means of the
shade and rain they create. They produce wood and mulch for the ground around them in which many food sources
grow, e.g. mushrooms. Insects are also dependent on them for survival and without insects there will be no other life
forms.
But life exists under the trees for all types of animals, birds, insects and humans. Forests are the source of so much
that we depend on that it begs the question: why are we chopping them down? Why are companies allowed to remove
trees for the sake of mining coal, as in Queensland where a deal is being stuck to allow an enormous coal mine, twice
the size of anything that has gone before, to come on stream for an Indian company of all things? This one mine will
produce 60 million tonnes per annum and the pollution from the burning of it will be astronomical, especially for India
and surrounding regions.
There seems to be little hope of saving forests where money can be made by removing them. Development and
pollution is set to end all life on earth and before much more time passes. Without the trees everything dies.
It's not just environmentalists who should be shocked by what is happening to our forests. Every human is dependent
on them and we should be asking about the function of trees before supporting and allowing their removal. The
alternative is chocking to death in a carbon filled atmosphere without oxygen.
