Endangered White Tigers

white tigers are very rarely seen in the wild. The white tiger cannot be considered as a sub-species,

but is a result of recessive yet rare genes of the Bengal tiger, and is actually a color variation. It is

estimated that only one in 10,000 births can result in a white tiger naturally. Over the past couple of

centuries, white tigers have become even rarer in the wild, with some unsubstantiated sightings in the

Siberian wild, due to trophy hunting or capture for exotic pet trade. Today, the white tiger can still be

found in a handful of zoos and animal sanctuaries around the world, with these large and beautiful

felines often being the star attraction.

Giant pandas in danger

China's giant pandas have long been threatened with extinction, suffering from low birth rates

and human encroachment on their habitat. Now they are facing a new threat - starvation

China's state-run media says their favourite food, arrow bamboo, is beginning to die off. It is part

of a cycle that happens every sixty years and the new crop will take around ten years to

mature. Last time the bamboo bloomed was in the 1980s and then around two hundred and fifty

giant pandas died of starvation.

Now at least one nature reserve is trying to move those animals at risk into new habitats or find

them new sources of food. In another blow for the giant panda, it is being reported that the

endangered Tibetan antelope is being tipped asChina's Olympic mascot, ahead of the panda.

One official was even quoted as lobbying for the antelope because it is more sporty than the

other contenders. But panda supporters are holding out hope that Beijing's

Olympic emblem could be composed of more than one animal.

Hero Pets

The storybooks abound with tales of heroic pets, and the amazing deeds they performed to save their masters

from danger, or protect innocent children from harm. The classic TV series Lassie featured the classic “heroic”

family dog, seemingly saving disaster-prone Timmy from a new and horrific fate in each episode. But few of us

have personally been saved by a pet, or know a close friend who has. You almost have to wonder if such hero

pets are just a topic for fiction writers, or if such animals really do save lives on a daily basis around the world.

Would You Know What To Do If Your Puppy Or Dog Fell Ill

A pet relies on its owner to look after it. Sometimes a veterinarian is too far away when your puppy needs

immediate attention. Would you be able to administer basic first aid if you needed to?

It is up to you to be able to administer the first aid that your pet needs when he needs it. Something can happen

at virtually any time at home or away from home. You should have with you a first aid kit that is designed for your

pet in mind. If you take your pet away from home frequently, make sure to store the first aid kit in your car as

well. These tools can save your pet’s life.

Here are some of the things that you should have within that kit:

Hydrogen peroxide

Gauze pads and tape

Absorbent cotton/cotton balls

Scissors with a round tip

Instant ice packs

Tweezers

A bulb syringe to be used to remove mucous from the mouth/nose

Eyewash solution specific for pets

A clean white cotton sock for paws that are hurt

Flashlight

A rectal thermometer

Medication syringe for dispensing medication

An electrolyte liquid such as Pedialyte

You need to protect these products so keep them in a hard shell container that has a tight fitting lid. You should

also have the vet’s name and number written and enclosed in this package. You should know and secure

information about the local emergency pet hospital as well. Also, when you leave your pet with another caregiver

to take care of, such as when you are traveling, you need to provide them with the kit and a release form

authorizing them to seek treatment for your pet.

A common dilemma is the bee sting. If this happens to your pet, you should restrain the animal and use a pair of

tweezers to remove the stinger. Then, bath the area with a mixture of water and baking soda to relieve some of

the pain. You can help to reduce swelling by using an ice pack on the area and using Benedryl. Make sure you

know how much to give your pet by asking the vet.

What should you do if your dog is injured?

You’ll need to approach the animal slowly and carefully because they may snap or bite at you. It is just a nature

reaction for them to do this. See what has happened to them and reassure the pet that you are not going to hurt

her through a smooth voice and calmness.

Your first concern is to stop the flow of blood as quickly as possible. Apply pressure to the wound and hold it

there. Make sure to use a cloth that is clean and change them as needed. Keep as much pressure on it as

possible until you get to your vet. If you need to, tape a thick gauze pad to the wound. You’ll want to keep as

much pressure on the wound though, so if possible have someone else transport you.

In the case of choking, you should use a flashlight to check down the throat. If you can, remove the object. If you

can’t see it, you’ll need to use a Heimlich maneuver that is designed for your pet. As a pet owner, you should

have this basic training taught to you. It is important to do it correctly in order to protect against serious injury of

the pet. You can get this type of training at your local humane society or through your vet. You can also learn how

to give your pet CPR and how to deal with serious injury and poisoning.

House Training A Dog The Simple Way

The puppy is new and oh so cute. You cuddle with it every day and love to chase it around the yard or play tug of

war with the stuffed animal that, in a year will probably be missing most of its limbs. However, all is not fun and

games in the house with the new puppy. Now comes the hard part, house training the dog.

As the new puppy does one of two things to relieve him/herself in the middle of your new white carpet you find

yourself wondering why it is so difficult for the dog to understand that you do not go in the house. You think to

yourself why would anyone, animals included, go to the bathroom where they live? Would they not want it as far

away as possible? You think your puppy must just be thickheaded, anyone with a dog has looked at their animal at

this stage and said “you stupid dog”. However, then you remember that for a couple years after you were born

you not only went to the bathroom where you live but actually in your pants and you feel slightly bad for being so

frustrated with your dog’s seeming lack of intelligence.

House training a dog is without a doubt a frustrating process. You wish you could just throw them outside and

they would figure it out themselves. Unfortunately it is not this easy; it requires a bit more patience and

perseverance. So you do a couple things as you look at the seemingly hopeless situation that has the potential to

turn very expensive if you are again forced to replace your carpet. First of all you remember that you knew house

training a dog was not easy or fun, second you remember that you are the idiot that bought new carpet two

months before you decided to get a dog. Now you suck it up and you go to the book store to get the newest book

on house training a dog and hope that it has some enlightening information that will save you both time and

money-discounting the $30 you just spent on the book of course.

Your Pet S Health Protect Your Children

If we had to name two things children want, it could be easily covered under the titles, pets and toys. We all loved

toys as children and still love our pets even as adults. Pets play an important role in their owners’ lives. Some

pets have even been known to save lives and learn to dial 911 in an emergency. As companions, they provide us

with warmth and friendship, as well as undying loyalty. Some pets have special training and can assist people

with disabilities. Others are great hunters and protectors of our property and our families.

For a child, a pet means even more. For children, a pet represents many things. They learn about relationships,

compassion, responsibility, love, and so much more. It is not impossible to raise a child without a pet, but their

lives are greatly enhanced if they are allowed to have one.

No one can downplay the significance of owning a pet. The benefits far outweigh the pitfalls. However we have to

know how to be safe when choosing a pet – especially when we have children. Not only do we have to choose the

right pet for our family, we also must keep our pets in good health to protect others in our household. And,

keeping a pet healthy can be expensive. Certain types of pets require more care than others and you should

always consider whether or not you can afford not only the purchase of your pet, but also the ongoing care they

will require.

However, your concern for your child’s health is directly related to your concern for their pet’s health. There are

diseases that a child or even an adult can contract from pets. Keeping your pet healthy is very important to your

child’s health.

Zoonotic diseases or Zoonosis are terms used to describe diseases that can be transferred from animals to

humans. Normal contact with an animal or contact with an animal’s bodily fluids can result in the transfer of

disease.

I don’t want to scare parents away from getting a pet for their child because as I said, the benefits of owning a

pet far outweigh the dangers and drawbacks if you take the necessary precautions. Here are 10 tips you should

follow when choosing a pet for your child.

1. Do not buy a pet from disreputable dealers who keep large numbers of animals caged together waiting to be

sold.

2. Always check the facilities where the animal was kept while waiting to be sold. If the conditions there are bad,

then likely the condition and the care of the animal prior to sale was likely bad also.

3. Find out what care has been provided to the animals, by a licensed Veterinarian, prior to being sold.

4. Read whatever tips you can find about the type of pet you are purchasing for your child. You should know any

diseases that type of pet is known to be susceptible to. You should know all about the proper shelter, food, and

care your child’s pet will require. Reading up on this prior to purchase is a good idea, so you will know what you

are getting into.

5. Clean your pet’s shelter and make sure all feces are removed daily.

6. Make sure you have a qualified Veterinarian examine the pet before you hand it over to your child.

7. Bathe your child’s pet regularly. Keep in mind your child will be in constant contact with their pet. Whatever the

pet gets into, your child gets into.

8. Make sure your children get into the habit of washing their hands every time they handle their pet.

9. Stay current with all vaccinations and checkups your Veterinarian recommends. If your pet seems ill, keep your

child away from them until you can get them to a Veterinarian.

10. Teach your child how to handle your pet to avoid having it injure your child. Make sure they know not to

squeeze it too tightly, pull on its extremities, agitate it, or tease it unnecessarily.

These 10 tips I am providing you are by no means all the things you need to be aware of. Specific types of pets

have different rules you need to be aware of about handling and caring for them. You should include your child in

the learning process where possible so they understand why those rules are necessary. Read up on the pet you

are bringing into your home and spend time discussing your questions and concerns with your veterinarian.

I hope this article has been helpful to you as a parent. Remember, know what you are getting into before you

choose a pet for your child. What you don’t know could cost you in more ways than one.

We May Be Pampering Our Pets To Death

The variety of online pet supplies is large and catalogs can be your source for all the things you need to keep Fido

or Fluffy happy and healthy. We go as far as buying outlandish designer dog accessories, even more expensive

than what we buy for ourselves, but we don’t pay enough attention to pet medication.

Whether your animal is involved in a pet therapy program, or just a loveable member of your family, the all

important thing for you to remember about your pets is that their care is your responsibility.Naturally, you should

always have your pet checked by a reputable veterinarian and follow his (or her) advice. Find out from your vet

what your pet needs and order your pet meds online. It’s fast, easy and you’ll save money.

A simple reminder to cat owners: milk and other dairy products are not good for your favorite feline. They can

cause severe problems to the digestive system.

Also, remember not to let your pet get overheated. It is just as dangerous for your four legged friends as it is for

you. Heat stroke isn’t reserved for humans.

Look for unique online pet products for some wonderful ideas to keep you and your pet comfortable during the hot

days of summer. You’ll be able to find the perfect pet carrier that will be comfortable for your dog or cat and easy

for you to transport. Check out all the discount pet supplies that are available online.

Did you know that it’s the hope of a growing number of doctors, researchers and animal behaviorists that, in the

very near future, pet-patient interaction will shed its “alternative therapy” tag?

Scientifically measuring the benefits of pet therapy was the genesis behind Michigan State University’s Human-

Animal Bond Initiative conference of pet experts. The goal is that scientific research will validate animal-assisted

therapies and help convince skeptics and critics of its value.

Studies would also help pet therapists confirm that putting a funny hat on a 75-pound collie and having it interact

with someone undergoing cancer treatment is, as they expected, doing more for the patient than goading an easy

laugh. The recent push for scientific studies is a marked departure for a treatment that has been historically

supported by purely anecdotal evidence

Crisis Checklist Saving Your Pet S Life When Disaster Strikes

Help could not come soon enough for the residents of New Orleans and the surrounding Gulf areas. But for

devoted animal owners rescue came at a price…leave your pet behind. Having a plan in place before disaster

strikes can save both you and your pet’s lives. Here’s what to do now.

General Helpful Hints

1 If you live in an apartment, consider putting an “animals inside” sign on your door. In case of fire, your pet’s

chances of survival may increase if the firemen know.

2 Keep carrying cases, leads, etc. in an easily accessible location. If you must leave quickly, time spent looking for

these items is time lost.

Know Your Neighbors

The help of a good neighbor can sometimes be your first line of defense.

1. Exchange your house or apartment key with a trusted neighbor. Exchanging keys with a neighbor offers the

benefit of proximity. Should an unexpected crisis arise, your neighbor can reach your pets quickly. Friends or

family may not know about the problem until it is too late.

2. Make a Plan. Discuss what to do in case of emergency. Do you have a cell phone? Make certain your neighbor

has the number as well as any additional telephone numbers where you can be reached such as work or family.

Write them on an index card in bold, large print, and laminate it.

3. Fido, Buffy, Max, Celia, Snorky… If you have more than one pet, make certain your neighbor has the following

information:

a. The Number of Pets You Have. If they know how many pets they need to find, chances increase greatly all will

be rescued.

b. What Type of Animals You Have. If Celia is a goldfish and your neighbor is looking for a dog, Celias’ chances of

rescue drop. Make certain you are clear regarding the type of animal your neighbor should find.

c. Location of Pets In Your Home. This is important for caged animals such as birds, snakes, hamsters, etc. Do

you keep your dog penned in the backyard? Let them know. The less time your neighbor spends searching for

your pets, the more time they have to get them out quickly and safely.

d. Hi. My Name Is… If your neighbor can’t find your pet, they may respond if their names are called. Will they

come when you whistle? Tell your neighbor. The more specific information they have, the better your pet’s

chance of rescue.

On the Road Again

Before you leave for a vacation or an extended trip, talk with the person who will be caring for your pets. Make

certain it is someone you trust such as a responsible family member, friend, or neighbor. If you use a pet sitting

service, check their credentials before you leave. Ask for names of other clients who have used their services and

call them to see if they were pleased. Better to know before you go rather than returning to an unpleasant

surprise.

Discuss specifically what your sitter would do if a crisis arises and always leave contact numbers where you can

be reached (hotel, cell phone, etc).

Points to consider:

1. If a problem occurs, will your sitter take your pets until you return? If not, give them the name and telephone

number of a friend, family member, kennel or doggy spa they can contact to take your pets.

2. If an evacuation occurs, will your sitter take your pets?

3. In case of evacuation, give your sitter the telephone number of a family member or friend outside the effected

area who can act as a contact. If you and your sitter cannot reach each other, you can each call the contact who

can help relay information.

4. If one must leave the area, prearrange with family or friends within driving distance to take your pets. If you

have more than one pet, ask in advance to make certain they can house all of them. If not, find others who can.

Name, Rank and Serial Number

Make certain your pets have proper identification. Include your last name and telephone number as well as the

pet’s name on the ID tag. If you have one, consider using a cell phone number in case you and your pet are

separated and you can’t go home.

Your Little Black Book

Begin collecting important telephone numbers and information now so you have them if you need them. To gather

this information, conduct an Internet search for your area or contact animal associations such as the ASPCA or

The Humane Society. Your list should also include your vet and a 24 hour animal hospital.

1. Pet Friendly Shelters: Many shelters may not accept pets in need of a temporary safe haven, but some do. Find

the ones in your areas just in case.

2. Dog Friendly Lodging: Should you be displaced, know where to go. If you can’t reach friends or family, the

names, addresses, and telephone numbers of hotels and motels which accept pets can be a life saver.

3. Animal Rescue Centers. Even the best laid plans go astray. If this happens, call your local animal shelter or vet

and ask if they can provide assistance. If you have more than one pet, confirm that they will be able to take them

all.

If You Must Evacuate

If the situation becomes so dire you must leave, consider the following. Generally, time is of the essence.

1. Leave as quickly as possible and take your pets with you! Don’t leave your pets behind thinking you can return

and get them. Very often, you will not be permitted to return until the crisis is over.

2. If you are driving, load up the animals and hit the road. If you can’t take your pets where you are going, use

your back up family member or friend plan first. Then your dog friendly lodging or rescue shelter options. If worse

comes to worse, you may be able to find someone along the way who can help you.

3. If you cannot take your pet(s) to a safe place and you MUST evacuate, help improve your pet’s chances to stay

alive. Make certain dogs are unchained or uncaged. Pets left alone will rely on their natural instincts to survive.

How to Become an Animal Advocate in Five Easy Steps

Becoming an animal advocate is a choice many people make when they see abuse or hear about animals in need.
Watching television shows on Animal Planet, or finding animal news websites, can inspire people to become active in
fighting for their welfare. And for people who have rescued animals or adopted from shelters, making the decision to
volunteer to help animals is made easier once they become familiar with their local humane society or SPCA.
Once you have decided you wish to devote time to help animals, here are five easy steps you can take today that will
save lives.
1. Change what you eat. It is a fact that 10 billion farmed animals die each year to become meat products for the
American public. On average, each American eats 31 animals per year. By giving up meat and becoming a vegetarian,
you are in essence saving 31 lives each year.
2. Avoid products and drugs tested on animals. More than 25 million animals are used in laboratory testing in the United
States each year. Despite this, dozens of drugs tested on animals and approved by the FDA are taken off the market
after they show harm to humans. Buy products labeled "not tested on animals" or from companies who refuse to do
such testing such as The Body Shop and Kiss My Face.
3. Adopt shelter dogs and cats rather than buying purebreds from breeders. Over 4 million healthy dogs and cats are
killed in shelters each year simply because there are not enough homes for them. Yet 25% of dogs in shelters are
purebreds. When you adopt a dog or cat from a shelter you are saving their life.
4. Boycott circuses and aquarium shows. Every US circus company featuring animals has been cited for violating care
standards under the USDA's Animal Welfare Act law. Whether they are performing or traveling to a new venue,
elephants, lions, and other exotics used in circuses endure extreme suffering from abusive training techniques and
confinement in trailers and railroad cars. Visit circuses such as Cirque du Soleil where the performers entertain
audiences through amazing feats of human abilities.
5. Refuse to buy products made from fur or skin. In 2006, the annual Canadian seal hunt killed 350,000 baby seals
which were used to make seal skin products. In the US, 30 million mink, foxes and chinchilla's are killed by
electrocution and other inhumane methods to produce fur coats for humans. Purchase leather and fur-free clothing and
footwear from cruelty free websites such as Alternative Outfitters and The Vegan Store.
By making changes such as eliminating meat and animal products from your diet and wardrobe, not attending circuses
or aquariums, avoiding products tested on animals and by adopting homeless dogs and cats instead of buying
purebreds, you can become an activist for animals without ever visiting a protest demonstration.
