Looking For Large Dog Breeds That Dont Shed

By Roger Gibson

Pet fur can be a problem for many people especially asthma sufferers. It is impossible for any animal to cease shedding any dander and fur, but there are some dogs which lose less fur than others. Most of these tend to be smaller dogs and there are only a few large dog breeds that dont shed.

Dogs described as non-shedding does not mean they will not lose any fur at all. If you are an asthma sufferer it is still worth getting an allergy check before deciding to get a pet. Regular vacuuming and dusting will reduce the effects of dander and fur. Washing your hands after touching your pet will also help.

For people who need a pet that is known to shed very little, Poodles are a good choice. There are also many breeders selling Poodle crosses such as the Cockerpoo and Labradoodle. However, if there is not much Poodle in the breeding these are still likely to molt so check the ancestry before buying.

Dogs that have been bred to spend a lot of time in water also have coats which tend to lose less hair. The Portuguese Waterdog and Irish Water Spaniel are two such breeds. The Portuguese Waterdog was made famous as the pet of the Obamas and was frequently pictured on the White House Lawn.

Schnauzers are generally thought of as quite small, but the Giant variety has the same qualities as its tiny cousins. The hair is clipped short to the body leaving just the face and feet with long fur. This reduces the amount they molt.

The Flanders Cattle Dog or Bouvier des Flandres was nearly wiped out during the First World War. Used for military purposes and in the trenches, they were as much casualties as the soldiers they served. Technically they do molt but the outer coat traps the lost hair preventing it from floating to the floor. This trapped fur needs to be removed to prevent matts occurring so they need brushing at least once a week.

There is no easy way to tell if any particular dog will produce more or less fur. At the puppy stage they all tend to have fuzzy coats that they will change as they reach adulthood. Regular grooming with a brush or comb that best suits your pets fur will greatly reduce any shedding and keep them looking in top condition. Regular bathing in a mild shampoo will also reduce dander which can cause an allergic reaction.

When choosing a pet remember that its personality will also need to be factored in. Some dogs are more energetic and need lot of exercise. Others are highly intelligent and easy to train while some make excellent guard dogs or working dogs. All of the dogs which are considered to be low shedding do still need a lot of grooming so if this is likely to be a problem for you consider something short coated that sheds as the seasons change.
