What You Might Not Know About Raising Swine

By Lianne Derocco

Raising different kinds of livestock is one of our country's largest industries, whether they are smaller, independent farms or large factory farms. Raising swine is definitely a huge portion of livestock farming, with more than 55 million hogs being raised for market each year. Take a look at the following details about hog farming.

There are hog farms all over the world and throughout the United States, but most of these American farms are located in the center of the country, especially in states like Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin and Iowa. In the latter state, hogs actually outnumber people by quite a margin.

In the United States, pork is second only to beef as a meat choice. However, pork is the most commonly consumed meat in the world overall. In our country, most pork is eaten as ham, followed by sausage and bacon. Every market hog in the United States provides enough edible meat to provide one serving of pork each day for a whole year.

Surprisingly, hogs are not only used for food, but also used in many other products. These products are found particularly in medical products. Hog co-products are used to produce corticosteroids, nitroglycerine, epinephrine and many other drugs. In addition, hog by-products are used in the production of everything from floor wax to matches to antifreeze.

Of course, a hog farmer's main concern is keeping the animals healthy. This includes not only ensuring that infected animals are separate from healthy animals, but also the farmer should restrict workers to certain areas of the hog farm. Hog waste is very toxic, and this must be dealt with in a way that reduces the risk of spreading disease or harming nearby human populations. Using a chemical-free product is the best way to deal with hog waste, and some of these products can reduce sludge, odors and flies while preventing crusting or foaming.

When you already have a great deal of crusting, build-up or foaming, using a swine waste management product such as the ActivatorPlus or ActivatorPlusLGT is recommended. The Activator Plus uses carefully selected microbial organisms to inoculate and activate the organic solids, liquefying that tough top crust. Then to maintain your lagoon or deep pit systems, simply toss in Activator Plus's sister product, the AgraSphere. This also uses safe microbial organisms to eliminate agricultural waste problems before they happen.
