Hog farms obviously need some mechanism for dealing with animal waste and oftentimes that is in the form of an anaerobic lagoon. Also known as a manure lagoon, this man-made basin is where animals waste is collected and treated.
Lagoons require very large land spaces to ensure not only that you have the proper and require distances between the lagoon and other buildings, but also because larger lagoons tend to have fewer environmental problems. It is also important that you build a lagoon that is eight feet deep or even deeper, as this improves digestion and decreases problems caused by excess surface oxygen.
Lagoons have the benefit of being fairly easy to build and relatively inexpensive to maintain, however they do pose health hazards to your workers, your animals and the surrounding community if they are not maintained properly. These include the emission of highly toxic fumes such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and methane gas. You must also ensure that no waste escapes from your lagoon, either spilling over the top or seeping out through leaks in the depths of the lagoon. This can spread pathogens such as salmonella and E. coli, which can be deadly. In addition it is wise to limit access to the lagoon in general.
You lagoon will have two separate layers, and the sludge layer will the densest layer and contains a great deal of sediment from your hog manure. The looser, more liquid layer above needs good aeration in order to prohibit crust from forming on top.
There are products out there that not only make maintenance easier; they also do not add any harmful chemicals into the environment. The biodegradable AgraSphereLGT, for example, are spheres that you literally just toss into your lagoon and they begin working to not only trigger the liquefying of solids, but also reduce odors, reduce insects such as flies and even enrich the value of your manure for use as a fertilizer. The manufacturer recommends that you place most of you spheres, about 2/3 of the spheres, in the areas with the largest concentrations of solids. The rest can be scatter in the remaining lagoon areas.
If you are having trouble with top level crusting, consider using the spheres' sister product, the ActivatorPlusLGT. This product contains a concentrated blend of microbial isolates that quickly inoculates and creates a balanced lagoon. When you begin using this product, apply bags of the ActivatorPlusLGT evenly over the lagoon and then re-treat in 30 days. You can apply more product and then re-apply in a week to ten days if you are having problems with your lagoon until the lagoon is balanced. After that, using the AgraSpheres and occasional maintenance treatments with the ActivatorPlus will ensure optimum results.
