Learn Why Your Dog May Need A Dog Diaper

By James Hamilton

Diapers are most associated with young children. However, at times, dogs may need to wear diapers. A dog diaper is specifically designed to be worn by dogs. You may wonder why your pet may ever need a diaper, but there are many reasons why it could need one.

One of the reasons why dogs need diapers is urinary incontinence. This is not a behavioral problem. Some of the factors that cause urinary incontinence in dogs include bladder issues, urinary tract infections, a weak urinary sphincter muscle and diabetes. Even the well-trained dogs can suffer from these issues and urinate uncontrollably. If your pet has urinary incontinence, you should consult a veterinarian. There are surgeries and drugs that may be used to treat the condition. However, if it is not possible to control incontinence in other ways, then you have to use diapers for dogs.

Aged dogs may also lack the ability to control urination and defecation. This usually happens when the pets forget what they have been taught. Dogs that are more than eleven years old are under the risk of suffering from canine cognitive dysfunction. This condition has similarities with Alzheimers disease. Although canine cognitive dysfunction can be treated using certain drugs, pet owners may still find the need to use diapers for dogs.

The other time you can use diapers is when your female dog has gone into heat. If you use diapers, you will be able to maintain a cleaner house and furnishings. The diapers will also help prevent regular licking, which is commonly experienced by female dogs during the heat cycle.

Another reason to use diapers is when house training your pet. However, you also need to be concerned about your pet, rather than just the carpets and furniture in your home. Therefore, even if you choose this house training method, you should still take your pet outside regularly, without the diaper so that it can learn where it is really supposed to relieve itself.

Both disposable and cloth diapers are available. There is a debate among pet owners regarding which the type of diaper is best. Cloth diapers offer the benefit of being friendly to the environment since they can be cleaned and reused. Nonetheless, not everyone is willing to wash soiled diapers. The other demerit of cloth diapers is that they have a higher initial cost. Disposable diapers, on the other hand, are convenient and easy to use. However, they are not friendly to the environment since they will end up in a landfill. The cost of these diapers also adds up as the days go by.

Diapers for dogs have variations in absorbency and fit. Therefore, it is vital to follow the product instructions for measuring and select the right absorption level. You should also change the diapers frequently. Do not let your pet be uncomfortable in a full or wet diaper. Soiled diapers can also cause diaper rash in dogs. The dogs may then experience itching, burning, inflammation and bacterial infections.

When changing your pet, it is advisable to use baby wipes. You should also wear gloves when changing the diapers to avoid coming into contact with feces and urine. Canine diapers have a hole for the tail of the companion animal. If the tail of your dog is docked, cover the hole with tape prior to using the diapers to prevent leakage.
