English Bulldogs For Sale In Missouri Can Make Wonderful Pets

By Patrick Wilson

The popularity of certain dog breeds changes with time. The animals that were most admired by one generation, are ignored by another. Through the years, the English bulldog has remained somewhere on the popularity list, but not at the top. There are sports fans who would love to own a replica of their favorite football mascot and others who are intrigued by their unique appearance and might be interested in English bulldogs for sale in Missouri though.

Even people who are not familiar with a lot of breeds, know an English bulldog when they see one. With their stubby legs, squat bodies, drooping jowls, and tongues hanging out, they are unique in looks. Originally bred to kill bulls for English butchers, these dogs have become beloved for their calm, loving, and patient personalities. Although the puppies can be rambunctious, the adult dogs quickly settle down.

Anyone who is thinking about purchasing a pet from a breed unfamiliar to them needs to spend a little time researching the temperament associated with it. You will want to be aware of what can cause bad behavior in the animal. These animals for instance, do not play around when it comes to meal time. They are very territorial about their food dish and getting in their way can have a bad result.

These dogs can make great pets for people who have limited living space and for elderly individuals who are not very mobile. Although the dogs should be walked daily to help keep their weight in check, they are not particularly active or prone to spurts of energy like some other animals. They are usually quite content to sleep and eat and follow you from the living room to the kitchen.

It's probably not surprising that training is not something most of these animals take to easily. If you are interested in a dog you can teach tricks, this is most likely not the pet for you. The only things that can really induce them to cooperate in a training session are food and loving encouragement. Raised voices and rough treatment will not be effective.

You can expect a healthy English bulldog to live for ten to twelve years. They need to be taken to the vet regularly for checkups. The breed is prone to certain health issues that should be monitored. They can develop hip dysplasia, deafness, eye problems, and cancer. If you intend to breed your pet, the female will most likely have to deliver via cesarean section. Their unique body type is not conducive to natural birth.

English bulldogs are notorious for their bad breath so their teeth and gums need special attention if you want to keep halitosis to a minimum. The deep folds in their faces should be kept clean and dry in order keep bacteria from forming, and their ears need regular cleaning. Occasional brushing and bathing are also necessary to maintain good health.

Dogs are great companions that usually become beloved members of the family. Before you accept the responsibility for a pet however, you should make sure the breed is a good fit for you and your household.
